A Haunting in Simsbury, Connecticut

The nine year old boy lay in his bed, almost ready to drift off to sleep. Suddenly, at the foot of his bed, a shadowy figure appeared. The figure asked the boy where his mother was, then disappeared through the closed door of the bedroom. This was one of the first incidents giving clue to the family that the house they rented was haunted. Another incident to occur was with a 29 year old cousin living with the family. This cousin began seeing the shadowy outline of an old woman. After seeing her many times, she finally 'spoke' to him and told him that her name was Elizabeth and she was from Ireland. She also told him that she was not certain what she was doing in the house. The cousin also said he saw a one-armed man who wore suspenders over a short-sleeved shirt. Other things happened also, such as wind chimes suddenly moving and clanking against each other when there was no wind. Other things to happen were moanings of the human kind in the house, when no one in the house would have made them. Also the family members saw various items levitate in the air by unseen hands. Lights would go on and off without assistance. But even these incidents where not the most startling events to take place in the house. The most startling incident was with six dolls. The dolls were part of a collection, placed on a the top of a bookcase. One of them, a Spanish dancing doll, looked as though it was changing its expression.

On numerous occasions the dolls would be found facing the wall instead of facing out as they had been placed. In addition, a picture of Jesus Christ which sat on the television set, was constantly being turned to face the wall. Even one time, members of the family saw the picture being turned towards the wall. At another time, the family saw the Spanish dancing doll lift into the air about five inches, dance through the air and then be placed at the other end of the bookcase. Before it came down, its head turned around on its shoulders so the head was facing the wall but the body was facing outwardly. Other incidents to occur were more serious.
At point, the mother of the family, felt a hand go around her neck and begin choking her. She prayed and the hands released their hold. But shortly after this, a crucifix on the wall came flying across the room and landed on the floor near her. The activities increased. Door opened and closed by themselves. Wailing sounds and footsteps were heard throughout the house. Various objects disappeared, such as money, a box of nails, a gun and its shells. Within twenty minutes or so they would reappear at another location in the house other than where they had originally been placed.

The house is a large home that sets back from the street. It was built in the nineteenth century and was expanded from a log cabin. It was at one time used as a halfway house for delinquent boys. The house is located on Woodland Street, Simsbury, Connecticut. It has been investigated by the well-known psychic Boyce Batey. His investigation covered a period of six months. Batey brought with him a medium named Paul Solomn who, when in trance, informed people that one of the entities in the house was a recently deceased relative of the families.

She, the medium said, was there because of her love for the family. When they moved to the house, she went with them. The woman was described to the family and the family members identified her as a cousin who had been mentally retarded. The investigators became convinced that this woman was responsible for all the activities in the house. It was her method of attempting to get attention. In addition, the mother of the family toldof having dreams about this cousin. When another relative told her that this was the way a dead person communicated wtih someone. The mother then insisted that the cousin not communicate with her via dreams and to go find someone else to communicate with in this manner. Shortly after this the activities in the house began. The one armed man was also confirmed. But how he related to the house was not determined. The family has moved and it is not certain if the house is still haunted or if the ghost doing the most activity went with them. But other disturbances did continue.
