UTAH
STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Utah State Historical Society, now housed in what once was the Denver & Rio
Grande Railroad depot, is the sight of our haunt this week. In 1910, in Salt Lake City, this building was constructed. Today it is a Salt
Lake City landmark.
There have been many psychic manifestations in the old depot. For one, there is
the beautiful brunette, wearing a purple dress (matching the style of the early
1900's), seen frequently. She is also heard singing in the ladies room of the
depot. The story goes, the beautiful lady, for many years, was engaged to a
handsome young man. The railroad station was the location of many meetings of
the two lovers. At their last meeting, an argument occurred, breaking off their
engagement. The young man took the ring from the woman's finger and threw it
across the tracks. In her rush to retrieve the ring, the young woman ran across
the tracks.
She failed, in her hast, to take notice of an on-coming train, which struck and
killed her. She haunts the depot, waiting for her lover to return.
A customer encountered her in the hallway, when she exited the ladies room. Another woman worker said she often heard the woman singing in the ladies
room, though no one else was inside. Bob Bowls, janitor, told of a party he
discovered. One evening he was called to check on the fuses, when the lights kept going on and off. He went into the cellar, surprised to find a group of people having a party. The group stopped momentarily, looked at
Bob Bowls, then completely vanished. Another such story comes from a guard of
the depot. He said he heard footsteps, every night at the same time, on the
balcony of the depot. He would never find anyone when he checked. He finally timed his security check so he would be on the balcony at the same time as the footsteps. He heard them coming towards him, but saw nothing, yet held fast. The footsteps edged closer, then finally something brushed past him. The
footsteps continued down the stairs. A restaurant employee told his story. He
was working late one evening mopping floors. The power went out. As he started towards the switch box, in hopes of determining why the lights had failed, he felt someone
standing beside him. When the invisible someone spoke to him, telling him to leave the
building now, the man needed no further conversation, he quickly ran out the door.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Depot is now Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande Street, Salt Lake City, Ut. The historic depot is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Rio Grande Cafe, still exists, is
open at lunchtime. Be cautious though, you may be joined by some uninvited guests. And if one tells you to leave the building, I would suggest you do
so, quickly.
