AREA 51 Darkness falls over the valley region, the heat of the desert sun finally begins to cool and the sky, once a burning sun, now glows with the huge multitude of stars a city dweller never sees until they are out in the wide open like this. The Milky Way is so easily distinguished, one almost has forgotten what it looks like in the night sky. A sliver of a June moon dimly lights the mountains surrounding the valley floor and the only way to describe the region is beautiful. To the east of the highway lies something some consider sinister as well as clandestine: AREA 51. Five of us took a trip up to Rachel, Nevada on June 21st 1996. The plan was to investigate the area known as AREA 51. During the daytime, we took the 15 mile drive down the dirt road that leads to an entrance of Nellis Air Force Base, the one to the area claimed to be AREA 51. While we were there, we would talk with the people at the motel we stayed at, the Little A'Le'Inn, as well as the gentleman who runs the Area 51 Research Center. Everyone was more than helpful to us, in fact they were all very nice and informative. Navigating the roadways, we came to two signs on either side of the road warning not to go beyond that point. They also warned not to take photographs of the area and not to attempt to climb the hills that overlook the base. The signs said a fine of $600 for such violation can be assessed and that the "use of deadly force is authorized". On the hillside to the left, once known as "Freedom Ridge", are two radar antenna devices. With the use of binoculars you can see one of these devices is equipped with a video camera, and the other with a microphone or sound sensing device. We stayed behind the signs and had no problems. We were not confronted by any white Cherokee jeeps or black helicopters, as is said will and does happen if you get too close. We looked around the area, then moved on, driving back to the highway. That night we went back, parked our vehicle by what used to be the black mailbox, and is now more white than black. There is a ranch, some eight to ten miles down the dirt road, to which this mailbox belongs. We took up our vigil of sky watching. Shortly after, another car with two young men drove up and parked next to us. They asked if we knew where the signs were and if we could direct them there. We attempted to explain to them how to reach the area, but with the darkness it would be difficult to spot specific items used for guidelines to ensure making the correct turns and/or going straight etc. After all, it is very easy to get lost in the open desert, especially at night. After talking with them for a short time we decided to lead the guys to the signs. They said we should all go because there was supposed to be a film crew there from France filming for a French documentary on the ever famous Area 51. The folks at the Little A'Le'Inn told them about the crew. Not seeking publicity, for we were not, we told them we'd drive down and they could follow but we would be turning around and coming back right way. We wanted to keep our eyes on the sky not the road. Off we went, their small rental car following some distance behind us, yet close enough for them to keep us in view. We reached the sign posted area about three minutes before them, made a U-turn well before the drawn line and headed back up the road. When they finally arrived I told them the location was just around that small ridge, and pointed behind our vehicle. I warned them not to cross the line. They said thanks and we all took off in our own direction. We drove down the road and when we reached the left turn we had to take, our attention was drawn to the road we were leaving. A video camera went on, the binoculars were now in use by everyone in the car. Down the road came the small car we had lead to the signs but driving much faster than they had on the way there. Behind them was another vehicle with extremely bright lights on the front of it. Above the small car was another vehicle, though the lights on it made it impossible to see if it was a helicopter or not, it had to be because it was floating and following this car in the air. When the small car reached the turn we had just made the vehicle behind it and the helicopter broke off the chase and departed. We started driving and did not stop until we were almost to the main highway. When we did stop the small car caught up with us a few minutes later. Much to our surprise, the French film crew was at the same spot as where we stopped to talk with the guys in the small car. Seems they got out of their car and took pictures of each other right by the signs warning them not to cross the line or take photographs. Next thing they knew they were being chased by a jeep and a black helicopter. The French film crew was in heaven, the camera man rushed to get this all on tape and let everyone just tell their story as they wished. We showed them the tape we got on the chase and everyone gathered round the two inch square screen on the Nikon video camera to see what they could see. Fear finally leaving the young men the atmosphere turned more into a party type atmosphere and everyone started chatting back and forth exchanging stories and things they had heard. It was eleven thirty when we arrived at the black mailbox for our vigil and one thirty by the time we left the area. People in our party were getting tired. So we took those who wanted to sleep back to the inn and those who wanted to return could. I was one who wanted to go back. After all, I wasn't terribly concerned with a helicopter chase, that wasn't what we came here to see. So two of us drove back and took up vigil at the mailbox once again. What we did see in the restricted airspace over the base was this: Four objects, not clearly defined as airplanes, flew from a region in the hills where two lights continued to flash on and off as well as fade in and out to a bright light area that clearly was coming from the valley floor of Nellis. In what we estimate to be at least fifteen miles distance between the lights in the hills and the bright light of the valley floor these four objects traveled in less than three seconds. One of the objects held in a flight pattern of a circle then shot off towards the light on the valley floor. What was it? I don't know for certain. Was it a UFO? I'm not sure of that either. Whatever it was, it moved faster than anything I am aware of in existence in the form of planes etc. What is Area 51? Good question! Many have asked this question of numerous governmental agencies. According to those agencies Area 51 is non-existent; yet old government maps mark Nellis Air Force Base and Nuclear Testing Range with the words Area 51. Whether it is called Area 51, Dreamland, The Ranch, Watertown Strip, The Pig Farm or just simply Nellis it does exist. Whether it is a sight location for UFOs or inter-planetary traveling remains to be seen. Though the Governor of Nevada has decided to name the highway, highway 375, the Extraterrestrial Highway. After visiting the region, watching the night skies for several hours, spotting various things in the sky, clearly not normal airplanes, the only conclusion I have come to is this: It is a testing facility for the United States Air Force for new and innovative flight mechanisms that may or may not have fighter capabilities. From outward appearances, whatever the Air Force is doing on the old Groom Lake dry bed, there is no apparent threat or harm to the environment or the animal life in the region. We therefore can only assume that it is nothing more than a classified region of testing and information which is submitted on a "need to know" basis. One more thing to keep in mind! With all the publicity given Area 51 as of late perhaps the truth of this area is not here. Perhaps the truth is the government is keeping your attention drawn to Area 51 with all the publicity so it can continue the testing of equipment in another location. The old slight of hand trick. If your attention is drawn to the left hand you never see what the right hand is doing. Maybe what is really going on in this desert region is going on right behind you while you keep your eyes glued to the sky to the west. Regardless of what is true, the government is not talking and because of this, everything else is pure speculation.
